| 7:30-8:45am | Registration | | 8:30am | Welcome and Opening Remarks | | 8:45-10:15am | "The Ins and Outs of Maternal Fluids and Newborn Weight Loss" Joy Noel-Weiss, RN, IBCLC, PhD Clinicians who work with breastfeeding women and their families use neonatal weight measurements as a key indicator of breastfeeding adequacy. Excess newborn weight loss is often assumed to be the result of lack of feeding; either low supply or inadequate transfer. Dr Noel-Weiss will present a study undertaken to explore non-feeding factors that might be related to newborn weight loss. The relationship between the intravenous (IV) fluids women received prior to their babies' births and newborn weight loss during the first 72 hours postpartum was the primary interest. Neonatal output was also tracked. The results indicate a change in practice should be considered. | | 10:15-10:30am | Break | | 10:30-12:00 | A look at fashion through the ages, health claims and their possible problems, lymph drainage, breast surgery, and breast cancer. This talk covers territory we may never even have considered, no matter how many years we've been "thinking about breasts." | | 12:00-1:00pm | Lunch | | 1:00-2:30pm | "Staying Mother-Centred: How IBCLCs Manage Ethical Dilemmas" Joy Noel-Weiss, RN, IBCLC, PhD In this session, Dr. Noel-Weiss will present the results of a qualitative study that asked the question, “How do IBCLCs manage ethical dilemmas in their work?” Following this presentation, participants will be able to: 1) define ethical dilemmas; 2) examine their own work for real and potential dilemmas; 3) take steps to resolve their dilemmas; and 4) recognize the need to advocate for mothers and their families when ethical dilemmas arise. | | 2:30-2:45pm | Break | | 2:45-4:15pm | A breastfeeding culture must also have a strong sense of breastfeeding as our biological norm. So far, we frame almost everything as if formula feeding were safe and normal. It takes a while to learn to reframe our thinking; there's no better time to start than now! In fact, we’re reframing everything about breastfeeding. Biological Nurturing® is a latching approach based on free-flowing “conversation” between mother and baby. Language and latching – two big changes in breastfeeding help. | | 4:15-4:30pm | Door Prizes, Evaluation |
